Clarification sought on the status of Chumbe Island (+français)

We commend Chumbe Island Coral Park/sanctuary for their contribution towards the conservation and protection of the marine and coastal resources. On behalf of the Board of Trustees for the Marine Parks and Reserves we wish to take this opportunity to congratulate them for the award they received.

We also would like to take this opportunity to clarify that there is only one marine park in Tanzania. This is Mafia Island Marine Park. A second marine park is to be gazetted soon. This is Mnazi Bay Marine Park. Chumbe Island is by law a sanctuary. We do not understand why it has been said to be the first marine park in Tanzania. Before Mafia, eight other marine reserves were gazetted in mainland Tanzania which share a similar legal status to Chumbe Island.

We would like to receive a clarification on what criteria were used to qualify Chumbe Island for marine park status

DEMANDE DE CLARIFICATION SUR LE STATUT DE L'ILE DE CHUMBE

Nous louons une initiative telle que celle du parc/sanctuaire corallien de l'île de Chumbe pour sa contribution à la conservation et la protection des ressources marines et côtières. Au nom du Conseil d'administration des Parcs et Réserves nous profitons de cette occasion pour les féliciter du prix reçu.

Nous aimerions aussi en profiter pour rappeler qu'il n'existe qu'un seul parc marin en Tanzanie: le Parc Marin de l'Ile de Mafia. Un deuxième parc devrait être bientôt officialisé: il s'agit du Parc Marin de la Baie de Mnazi. L'Ile de Chumbe a un statut légal de sanctuaire. Nous ne comprenons pas pourquoi il a été dit qu'il s'agissait du premier parc marin en Tanzanie. Avant Mafia, huit autres réserves marines ont été officialisées sur le continent en Tanzanie et partagent le même statut juridique que celui de l'Ile de Chumbe.

Nous aimerions recevoir des clarifications sur les critères qui ont été utilisés pour classer l'Ile de Chumbe en parc marin.
